Holiday Declared on June 1st , DC warns of action in case orders violated. 12 ID proofs valid to cast vote

District Election Officer Sakshi Sawhney on Friday announced that a special holiday has been declared on Saturday to allow the voters to cast their votes for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Sawhney further detailed that all government offices, boards, corporations, and educational institutions will observe a gazetted holiday on June 1st

This holiday has also been declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. Employees working in industrial establishments, businesses, trades, or any other establishments in Punjab will also have a paid holiday on June 1, 2024, as per Section 135B(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to cast their votes. Sawhney said that those violating the orders, will face severe action. 

Meanwhile in order to make the voters and staff aware of the electoral photo identity card (EPIC) and 12 alternative documents that can be used to cast their vote, the District Election Officer Sakshi Sawhney stated that Election Commission of India (ECI) has allowed use of EPIC or 12 alternative identity documents for the voters to cast their votes.

In addition to the EPIC , which is known as voter card, other 12 alternate identity cards prescribed by the Election Commission of India are Indian Passport, Driving License, Service Identity Card with photographs issued to employees by Central / State Government / PSU / Public Limited companies, passbook issued by Bank/Post Office having photograph, PAN Card, Smart Card issued by RGI under NPR, MGNREGA Card, Health Insurance Smart Card issued by Ministry of Labour, Pension document with photograph, identity cards issued by MP/MLA/MLC, UDID card issued by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India and Aadhaar card

Sawhney also asked the voters to cast their vote enthusiastically without any sort of fear and inducement today.
