MCL, CEEW and USAID to start Zero Waste Schools Program in Ludhiana

Municipal Corporation Ludhiana (MC) in collaboration with the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) is set to launch the "Zero Waste Schools Programme" for schools in the city.

This initiative aims to encourage and support sustainable waste management practices in schools through zero waste audits. This project is being taken up under the USAID-supported Cleaner Air and Better Health (CABH) project and it would be launched MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi on April 26.

The launch event will bring together key stakeholders from both public and private schools, TULIP fellows and civic body officials. The gathering will explore the challenges and opportunities associated with waste management within school premises.

MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi said that the civic body is actively working for improving the  solid waste management (SWM) in the city. The 'Zero Waste Schools Programme' would further bolster our city's action plan aimed at improving waste management.

Understanding the pivotal role that schools play in shaping community behaviours, this programme aims to harness the potential of teachers and students as 'change agents' through the Zero Waste Schools programme, said Priyanka Singh, Programme Lead at CEEW.

Adeel Khan, Research Analyst at CEEW said that this programme was conceptualised during the CEEW Ideator Fellowship—an initiative aimed at empowering young innovators to address societal challenges. Through workshops and sessions, school children, guided by industry experts and CEEW researchers, actively contributed to the development of waste audit protocols tailored to their school environments.

The officials stated that this program would lay down a comprehensive roadmap for fostering collaboration within the school community to enhance waste management practices.
